About The RAV4 Brake Pads
During the lifetime of your Toyota RAV4, you will probably find you need to replace the brake pads several times.
By doing this they also wear away slightly and this is what leads to them needing to be replaced.
If you do not replace the brake pads on your RAV4 once they start to get low you run the risk of running out of rubber.
When this happens you can find that the brake disks get damaged and also need replacing – as well as running the risk of having reduced brake strength.
RAV4 Brake Pads Replacement Cost
Replacing the brake pads on a Toyota RAV4 is fairly easy, some people do this themselves without visiting a garage or dealership.
In terms of safety though you may not want to “practice” for the first time with your family’s car.
Getting them changed at a garage or dealership will probably cost you around $50 for the labor.
The brake pads themselves are priced sensibly at around $10 each – although most of the time you are forced to buy two or four at the same time.
Genuine OEM brake pads for the RAV4 can be considerably more expensive than the third-party ones, expect to pay roughly twice as much for these.
Spending a bit more money you can get a complete kit that contains not only the brake pads but many of the other components around them.
This can be a good idea to buy in order to make the most of the time where they are accessible – some of the clips and parts can be close to the end of their life too.
The lifetime of RAV4 Brake Pads
Depending on the way you drive you can expect to replace the brake pads in a Toyota RAV4 between every 30,000 and 50,000 miles.
This is usually every 3 to 5 services, so if you have your car serviced once a year then at a push your brake pads will see 5 years of life.
The best way to tell if your RAV4 needs new brake pads is by measuring the thickness of the rubber left on them.
If they have 2mm or less left then you should see about getting them replaced sooner rather than later.
A pad thickness of less than 1mm requires immediate changing and can start to lead to rotor damage shortly.
RAV4 Brake Pad Clips
Many of the smaller components around the brake pads can be replaced when the pads are changed, including the clips.
This is because they can take a lot of punishment being so close to the road and exposed to dirt, grime and salt from the roads.
As you can see from the following diagram, the brake pads are surrounded by many smaller parts.
Luckily these clips can be picked up for usually less than $10 and sometimes get thrown into kits you can buy when replacing the pads in a RAV4.
