Toyota RAV4 Lambda Sensor
Making its first appearance during the 1970s, the lambda sensor measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. Pioneered by Volvo, modern vehicles tend to have two of them to further improve the efficiency and reduce the pollution caused by the engine. You can find replacement lambda sensors (also called the oxygen sensors) for the RAV4 below.

About The RAV4 Lambda Sensor
You can find the (usually 4 of them) lambda/oxygen sensors around the exhaust section of the 4-cylinder engine Toyota RAV4 models.
It is an electrical component of the car that feeds information about the levels of oxygen in exhaust fumes to the ECU in order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
RAV4 Lambda Location
If you locate the exhaust manifold in the engine bay you can then see two of the “sensor 1” across the 2 banks sticking out of the metal pipe that connects into the catalytic converter.
Then after the catalytic converter, you will find two of the “sensor 2” devices across the 2 banks again as the pipe shrinks in size to enter the exhaust.
The first pair of lambda sensors in the RAV4 check to see how much oxygen is in the exhaust fumes before the catalytic converter is doing its job.
A second pair check to see how efficiently the catalytic converter is actually working – to let you know if it needs replacing.
Oxygen Sensor Problems & Faults
The only way you will find out that there is a problem with the lambda sensor in your Toyota RAV4 is if you see the check engine light on.
You may also notice before that a reduction in engine performance and efficiency comes before that as it begins to fail.
Those with a keen nose may also notice that the exhaust of the car is smelling like rotten eggs – a strong smell of sulfur can be caused by a faulty lambda sensor.
Luckily the RAV4’s built-in computer can display the faulty sensor if you or a mechanic plugs in an OBDII scanner.
On the screen of the scanner, you will be notified which of the 4 sensors are not working correctly.
If you are performing maintenance on the sensor then you may need the official wiring diagram for the Toyota RAV4.
RAV4 Lambda Sensor Price
Luckily, replacing a lambda sensor in the RAV4 is easy and not very expensive to replace – around $20-$50 from various retailers.
It shouldn’t take you or your mechanic a long time to replace either, reducing the further fitting cost associated with car repairs.
RAV4 Oxygen Sensor Recalls
In 2005 the company did put a recall that concerned the possible deterioration of the oxygen sensors in the RAV4.
It informed mechanics to check the lambda sensors and analyze the output signal to make sure that it is putting out the right information to the ECU.
If the sensors had shown a large amount of wear or were not working properly then they were to be replaced.
