About The RAV4 Coil Spring
The coil spring is a component that sits in the suspension of the RAV4 and absorbs slow movements and keeps the car level.
They work with shock absorbers to provide a comfortable ride and improve the handling of the car.
They are shaped like a traditional spring and have been in use since the RAV4 was originally introduced in the mid-1990s.
RAV4 Suspension Coil Problems
Over time the coil springs in your RAV4’s suspension can wear out due to being stretched back and forth multiple times.
They can also be damaged by leaving the car parked on uneven ground, causing them to wear unevenly.
You may also notice a new sound coming from underneath the car if the suspension spring/s have failed and the handling may feel wrong.
Another way you can diagnose a faulty spring/coil is by taking a look at the car on an even surface and checking for sag in one corner.
If you find that one of your tires is displaying fast wear than the rest this can also be another sign that the spring has failed.
As the suspension in a RAV4 is made up of multiple parts it is advised to get a trained mechanic or Toyota dealership to diagnose the problem for you.
Replacement RAV4 Coils Cost
Replacing the coils in a RAV4 involves using machinery to make sure that when you remove the suspension the whole assembly doesn’t shoot off.
When you reattach the suspension unit back into the car you need to compress it too, which also requires specialist knowledge.
It is not advised that you work on the suspension and shock absorbers yourself and seek help from a mechanic/dealership.
The labor involved in removing and changing the coils can be around 1-2 hours and so could cost between $100 and $200.
Then you add the cost of the parts on top as well, which is roughly $50 for each spring new or roughly half of that if you can find them second-hand.
Aftermarket versions are more expensive (typically 3 or 4 times as much), such as lowering springs that reduce the overall height of your RAV4.
They can improve the handling of the car at the sacrifice of accessibility, one of the key features of buying a crossover SUV.
RAV4 Suspension Spring Location
The suspension spring/coil in the RAV4 is located just behind the four wheels of the car between the suspension arm and the shell.
As you can see from that digram (where it is highlighted red) the shock absorber sits underneath and goes straight through the spring.
To access the coil itself you will need to remove everything below it to squeeze it out and replace it.
